Passing your North Carolina real estate exam is the first, and probably the most nerve-wreaking, step to becoming a real estate broker. The requirements for obtaining a North Carolina real estate license are some of the most challenging in the country. You want to make the most of what you learn in your coursework so you can pass your exam.

Taking any test can be stressful, especially one that impacts your career. Here are five tips for passing your North Carolina real estate exam.

Focus your real estate exam prep material

There is a lot of stuff to cover on the real estate license exam, so studying for the exam can be pretty overwhelming at first. Use the available exam prep study aids, so you focus on what you need to learn to pass the exam. Take the time to fill out the practice exams so you can identify those areas where your knowledge is weak, then focus on improving those areas.

Change up your practice exams so that you can get a feel for question variations and different wording. Make sure you understand the mathematical formulas and have them memorized. These will be key to being successful on the math sections of the exams. Focusing on what is challenging for you. This will make you all that much better prepared for the exam. Passing your North Carolina real estate exam will seem much less overwhelming.

Call a fellow real estate student or two

Connect with others who are preparing for the same exam and work together. Two (or more) minds are better than one. Studying with a group of like-minded people working toward the same goal not only helps cover more material, but it can help create an atmosphere of accountability. Being accountable to others can be very motivating and helpful to your studies.

Be well-rested on exam day

As with any test, do your best to get a good night’s sleep before the day of your test. Eat a good breakfast that day so you are not going into the exam hungry. Experts recommend that you skip any more practice testing on the day of your exam. Last-minute cramming can be counterproductive and may make you more anxious. Concentrate on being calm and staying focused on the material in front of you. If you have studied, passing your real estate exam should be a breeze.

Take your time

Don’t rush through the exam; take the time to read every word of every question. This might seem obvious, but it’s easy to misread in a timed, multiple-choice exam. One word that is misread can completely change the meaning (and answer) of a question.

If you misread or overlook a word like “all” or “none,” this can totally change the context of the question. Mistaking one word for another, such as reading “is” instead of “if,” can also change a question completely. Those who create the tests understand that and will likely include an answer in the multiple-choice that would be a correct answer in that situation. Taking the time to read each question carefully can make all the difference in whether you pass or fail your real estate exam.

Pay attention to the details

When you are nervous or feel like you need to hurry, it’s easy to overlook things. Make sure you keep track of the question you are on and that you don’t fill in your answer in the wrong place. If you are off by one line, that will mess up your entire exam. If you’re not paying attention, by the time you realize it, you may not have time to fix your answers. Do not leave any spaces blank. If you’re not sure, take a guess.
